Summer in Texas means it’s time for fun in the sun all season long! We have plenty of fun places to splash around in TX, from epic waterparks to splash pad to public pool. But one of my personal favorite ways to enjoy the summer sun is by scoping out some amazing swimming holes in San Antonio!

With summer in full swing, San Antonio locals always love getting outside for some fun and adventure! This city and (its nearby neighboring cities) have great swimming holes that will help you beat the Texas heat, cool off, and make some fun memories with your friends and family.

Oh, and a fun perk to visiting San Antonio swimming holes? It often won’t cost you a dime because there are many free or budget-friendly natural swimming holes hidden all throughout Texas! If you’re looking for a quick way to cool off this summer, check out these 10 best swimming holes in San Antonio. From the sparkling and crystal clear water, natural waterslides, and cheap amenities, there’s plenty to love about these hot summer spots.

All 10 of these swimming holes are within an hour drive of San Antonio. If you’re looking for a fun summer weekend activity, load up the car with a picnic, a few floats, and plenty of sunscreen, and enjoy a day of lounging around the pool with your friends.

1. Guadalupe River State Park Park

Guadalupe River State Park, located just outside of San Antonio, Texas, is an incredibly picturesque destination! It’s one of the most beautiful state parks near San Antonio that has swimming. It offers this perfect blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities.

This expansive park is nestled along the tranquil Guadalupe River, making it one the best spots for outdoor enthusiasts.

One of the highlights of Guadalupe River State Park is the popular swimming area, located near the park's main day-use area. This oasis is easily accessible and has clear, cool waters that invite visitors to take a dip and relax while enjoying the scenic surroundings. Whether you want to swim, float, or simply lounge by the water's edge, this swimming hole is going to be rejuvenating for you!.

Nestled in the heart of Texas Hill Country, Jacob's Well is a natural spring and one of the most beautiful swimming holes in Texas.

Specifically, it is a captivating underwater cave that leads to an expansive crystal-clear pool. The water is refreshingly cool, and the natural beauty surrounding the swimming hole adds to an enchanting atmosphere for visitors.

To visit Jacob's Well Natural Area, you need to pay the admission fee of $9 for regular adults and $5 for children. It's worth noting that due to its popularity, entry is regulated and reservations are required in advance. Reservations can be made online, ensuring a limited number of visitors at any given time, which helps preserve the tranquility and pristine nature of the site.

Parking at Jacob's Well Natural Area is also limited, so it is recommended to arrive early to secure a spot. While Boerne City Lake Park does not have a designated swimming hole, it offers a beautiful lake where visitors can enjoy various water activities. The lake provides opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. The tranquil surroundings and pristine waters make it a perfect spot to unwind and connect with nature.

Visiting Boerne City Lake Park is free of charge; it’s a great budget-friendly option for families! Whether you're looking to have a picnic, hike on the nature trails, or spend a peaceful day by the lake, the park offers something for everyone.

Reservations are not typically required to visit Boerne City, Lake Park since it's on a first-come, first-served basis. 4. The Frio River in Garner State Park

To access the swimming area, you have to enter Garner State Park. It’s easily accessible and offers a nice area for swimming and water activities. The river is COLD and it’s an ideal spot for families, friends, and nature enthusiasts to gather and enjoy a day of water fun since it has gentle currents and shallow areas.

To access Garner State Park and enjoy the Frio River, there’s an admission fee of $8 for 13 years old and above. The admission fee covers access to the swimming hole, picnic areas, hiking trails, and other park amenities.

Reservations are not required to visit the Frio River in Garner State Park but during peak seasons and weekends, the park can quickly reach its capacity so plan to arrive early, especially if you want to secure a prime spot along the riverbank.

Arriving early also ensures parking availability. Parking facilities are available within Garner State Park, and designated parking lots are conveniently located near the Frio River access points.

5. San Marcos River at Rio Vista Park

The San Marcos River is well known to all the Texas State students! It’s a gem that offers a delightful experience for college kids looking for a place to hang out and relax. Known for its cold waters and access points in the middle of town, it’s a perfect setting for swimming, lounging, and hanging out on a hot summer afternoon.

This swimming hole is one of the most popular spots in Rio Vista Park. The river's gentle flow and refreshing temperatures make it an ideal location for a relaxing swim or a fun-filled day with family and friends.

And because it’s a public waterway, there’s no admission fee required to access the swimming areas. So if you are looking for a budget-friendly option to escape the heat and experience the beauty of nature, visit the San Marcos River.

6. Landa Park Aquatic Complex

Landa Park Aquatic Complex is another amazing destination to add to your list! It seriously has endless water fun for visitors of all ages. Situated within the expansive Landa Park in the historic New Braunfels, this aquatic complex offers a range of exciting water attractions, making it a perfect spot to beat the summer heat.

There are two swimming pools that are centrally located within the complex itself. One of them is a large, Olympic-sized 50 meter pool that often hosts swim meets, and then there’s the historic spring-fed pool that stays 72 degrees. Visitors can enjoy a refreshing swim and cool off from the heat.

The pool is equipped with slides, water play structures, and interactive features that add an element of excitement, making it a favorite among families and children. Also, the complex has a fun splash pad/zero depth pool. There’s really something for everyone here!

Admission to Landa Park Aquatic Complex does require a fee, with separate rates for adults, children, and seniors. The complex also offers season passes for frequent visitors, which is a cost-effective way to enjoy the water park throughout the summer. No reservations are required, but it does get pretty crowded on the weekends..

7. Blue Hole in Wimberley Texas

Blue Hole in Wimberley, Texas, is a GORGEOUS natural treasure located near San Antonio. This enchanting swimming hole at Blue Hole is along Cypress Creek, which meanders through the park. Surrounded by towering cypress trees and lush vegetation, the crystal-clear waters of the swimming hole invite visitors to take a dip and revel in the natural beauty that surrounds them. The pristine waters provide a tranquil oasis where visitors can swim, wade, or simply bask in the sun on the grassy banks.

This swimming hole does have an admission fee to help maintain and preserve the park's natural integrity. But the cost of admission is honestly pretty affordable, and it gives visitors access to the swimming hole, as well as the park's other amenities, like hiking trails and picnic areas.

Due to its popularity and limited capacity, definitely make reservations very far in advance for guaranteed entry! I’m talking months in advance. Reservations can be made online through the park's official website, which is a very seamless and hassle-free visit.

Parking at Blue Hole Regional Park is available onsite and is also included in the admission fee. The park has designated parking areas near the swimming hole and other facilities.

8. Utopia City Park

Whether you're enjoying a picnic by the river or jumping in the water, Utopia City Park is a fun summer part that’s not too far from San Antonio. Sure, you’ll have to drive about 80 miles west of San Antonio, but that just allows Utopia City Park to offer a peaceful and scenic retreat while you take a break from the city's hustle.

The park is situated along the banks of the Sabinal River, which flows nearby, offering visitors the opportunity to wade in the shallow waters, fish, or simply float in a tube and soak up the tranquil atmosphere.

9. James Kiehl River Bend Park

James Kiehl River Bend Park is a fun destination located in Comfort, Texas that offers a variety of outdoor activities for nature enthusiasts and visitors of all ages. James Kiehl River Bend Park offers access to the Guadalupe River, which has plenty of opportunities for swimming and water activities. The river features calm sections where visitors can wade in the refreshing waters, relax on the riverbank, or even bring their kayaks or canoes for a leisurely paddle. The park's riverside location allows visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the surroundings while enjoying the water.

Admission to James Kiehl River Bend Park is free so visitors can explore the park's amenities and enjoy the outdoor activities without incurring any additional costs. Reservations are not typically required to visit the park but they operate on a first-come, first-served basis, allowing visitors to enjoy the facilities and activities without advanced booking.

10. San Pedro Springs Park

San Pedro Springs Park is a gem in San Antonio. It’s nestled in the south side of San Antonio, Texas. As one of the oldest parks in the United States, it’s a refreshing escape from the bustling city streets and a chance to immerse yourself in nature's tranquility. The park is well known for its iconic swimming hole, which serves as the centerpiece of the park.

While I’d love to list this one higher on the list, the truth is that San Pedro Springs Park hasn’t been very well maintained by the city. There’s often trash floating in the pool, the bathrooms aren’t clean very often, and the pool is generally understaffed. Hopefully SA is able to start taking care of this place soon, because it really is a beautiful San Antonio swimming hole!

It’s located just to the west of downtown San Antonio. This swimming hole at San Pedro Springs Park is easily accessible for locals and tourists alike. The crystal-clear waters of the spring-fed pool are gorgeous when the park is maintained! Even despite the lack of maintenance, it’s a popular spot during the summer months. Visitors can take a dip in the cool waters, lay out on the grassy banks, or simply relax under the shade of the park's stunning cypress trees.

The park also gives free admission to all visitors, so everyone can enjoy the park's natural beauty.

If you’re interested in renting a Gazebo, it costs $60 (Monday-Thursday) for the first four hours and an additional $15 an hour if you want to extend. For Friday-Sunday the rental cost doubles by $120 for the first four hours and $30 for the additional hours.

Even though it’s a free swimming hole, I definitely recommend arriving early, especially on weekends, as the park can get pretty crowded during peak times. Plus the amenities are first come, first serve. And like I said…the bathrooms aren’t super well maintained.
