1. Hemisfair Park

Hemisfair Park

If you’re visiting San Antonio with kids for the first time, put Hemisfair Park at the top of your list! It’s the iconic downtown park (yes, home to the “space needle thing” which is actually called the Tower of the Americas).

It’s packed with easy, fun, FREE things for kids:

  • Splash pad + wading pools 💦
  • Huge playground at Yanaguana Garden
  • Dough Pizzeria Napoletana (grab pizza + eat outside!)
  • Commonwealth Coffeehouse & Bakery (right by the playground ☕️)
  • The Magik Theatre (book ahead!)
  • Lick Honest Ice Creams

It's an easy win for families!

2. Morgan’s Wonderland

Morgan's Wonderland Carousel

I have to tell you about Morgan's Wonderland because it isn't talked about enough! But IMO this adorable theme park isn't listed high enough on most people's lists of best kid-friendly things to do in San Antonio. I can't say enough great things about this place!! (Read full review here!).

Individuals of any age or ability are welcome to explore, climb, play, and learn in their 25-acre park. There are more than 25 accessible rides, playscapes, and interactions. There's a theme park + an ultra accessible water park.

It was created by a dad who wanted a place where children with or without disabilities could all play together. Morgan's Wonderland is seriously one of the most darling places to bring kids in SATX! If you're planning a trip to San Antonio with kids I would absolutely prioritize this place!

3. Visit A San Antonio Mission (But NOT The Alamo!!)

The Alamo

Hear me out! Your kids will very likely visit the Alamo on a school field trip if they live in Texas, but it's NOT the most kid-friendly of the 5 San Antonio missions.

I love to bring my young children to Mission San Jose! It's absolutely gorgeous, and it's a few miles outside of the city so it's not as packed with tourists as the Alamo.

San Antonio Mission Best for Kids

Btw, did you know there are actually FIVE MISSIONS in San Antonio? They're all worth visiting (you can actually bike to all five of them in one day!) but you might only want to visit one or two if you're in San Antonio with kids, depending on how long their attention span is.

The missions are FREE to visit!

4. Visit The Riverwalk (But Not On The Weekends)

Go Rio Boat Cruise

If you've ever visited the San Antonio river walk on a Saturday evening and HATED it...it's because you went on a Saturday evening. 🙂

If you're going to visit San Antonio with kids, plan a nice morning adventure to the riverwalk! Here's why:

~ it's cooler in the mornings

~ the riverwalk isn't very crowded in the mornings

~ you can book a GoRio cruise (totally worth the cost!) and get a brief history lesson of San Antonio

~ after you're done with the riverwalk, you're close to Hemisfair Park and you can pop over there for lunch + playground time

809 E River Walk, San Antonio, TX 78205

5. DoSeum

DoSeum

The DoSeum Children's Museum is just as cool as everyone says!

The 2-story museum has all sorts of hands-on and interactive play including the spy academy, an innovation station, a really fun outdoor play area, and more. Kids play + learn and parents have a totally kid-friendly indoor place in San Antonio to let their children run wild and explore.

6. The San Antonio Zoo + Kiddie Park + Zoo Train

things to do with kids

More than a MILLION visitors love this one every year! The San Antonio Zoo is so much fun for the whole fam. This zoo is one of the oldest ones in the US. It was founded in 1914, and it sprawls across 35 acres with more than 3,500 animals.

Insider tip from a local: As the zoo is located in Brackenridge Park, you can pair it with a visit to the Kiddie Park for some classic carnival rides or get tickets to ride the San Antonio Zoo Train that makes stops at the Japanese Tea Garden and the Witte Museum.

Also worth noting: once a month, the San Antonio Zoo offers discounted tickets for San Antonio locals. See the full list of Locals Day offerings here.

7. Splash Pad at the Historic Pearl District

Splash Pad at The Pearl District

I selfishly love this one as a parent because I just looooove the historic Pearl District. It's packed full of so many incredible restaurants, bars, retail stores, and coffee shops.

There's a little splash pad + turf area right next to the food hall, and in the summertime there are always kids running around and playing there while parents hang out nearby.

Here's a guide to the best places to eat at The Pearl District, if you'd like to see!

8. Staycation At The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country!

Screenshot

Everyone knows the JW Mariott San Antonio is EPIC so it's no surprise it gets packed in the summers! It's such a fun staycation spot.

Bring the whole family, book a room, and enjoy the 9-acre guest-exclusive water park with a lazy river, sandy beach area, and multiple water slides.

Restaurants + kid-friendly activities on site! You can truly just stay here all weekend and have the best time.

9. Go To The Witte Museum With Your Kids

things to do with kids

The Witte Museum was established in 1926 and it’s still one of the coolest things to do with kids in San Antonio!

It’s an interactive museum focused on Texas nature, science, and culture, so you get a little bit of everything (which is great for families with diverse interests.)

10. Japanese Tea Garden in Brackenridge Park

Japanese Tea Garden San Antonio

These beautiful sunken gardens in Brackenridge Park are an so cool! You probably won’t make a full day of it, but you could definitely kill 30-45 minutes letting them climb the steps, watch the koi, and marvel at the waterfall.

The history of this space is really interesting and definitely worth mentioning to your kids: the space is sunken because it’s an abandoned limestone rock quarry. In 1917, prison labor was used to shape it into the archways, bridges, and islands that you see today.

It’s a breathtaking and historically significant space. Admission is free for everyone, 365 days a year.

Oh, and it's totally FREE to visit. Jus park and walk right in.

I pulled together the most-asked questions to help you plan your own fun family getaway to San Antonio!

Where are the best places to stay in San Antonio with kids?

Do I need to rent a car???

Give me a few good kid-friendly places to eat.

What are your top 3 can't-miss San Antonio experiences with kids?

Any cool playgrounds or splash pads?

How's the DoSeum? Any other fun museums for kids?

Where To Stay In San Antonio With Kids

The two best kid-friendly areas in San Antonio are Hemisfair and The Pearl. Both of these hot spots have tons of great restaurants, splash pads, outdoor space, live music, and activities.

If I were planning my own trip to San Antonio with two young kids, I 100% would book a hotel or vacation house near Hemisfair if you want to have space for the entire family. (Check out Southtown, which is also called the King William District! It's full of beautiful homes and it's really close to Hemisfair and downtown SA/riverwalk, so you'll be able to walk almost anywhere.

If you desperately want to stay in a hotel with your kids (great option if you want daily housekeeping and a hotel pool!) I love the Westin Riverwalk (heated rooftop pool, riverwalk views, and cribs available) or the Homewood Suites by Hilton Riverwalk (huge spacious suites if you're traveling with a big family and the location is phenomenal!

I can also share this guide that I made of the best kid-friendly hotels in San Antonio. Hope it's helpful!

Do you need a car for a family trip to San Antonio?

Yes. Haha, short answer, but yes!

There are plenty of walkable places (Hemisfair, riverwalk, La Villita, and Alamo are all within walking distance of each other) but you'll need a car to get to The Pearl, the DoSeum, the Japanese Tea Garden and San Antonio Zoo, and a few other fun family-friendly places in SA.

Best kid-friendly restaurants in San Antonio?

Here are 3 of my all-time favorites to get you started. If you want more ideas, check out this epic list to kid-friendly places to eat in SA.

Pinkerton's BBQ: amazing award-winning BBQ in downtown San Antonio with a HUGE outdoor yard where kids can run around.

Food Hall At The Pearl: They have a bunch of really fun food booths so everyone can get what they want before eating outside and running around in the splash pad.

Dough (Hemisfair Location: Legit the best pizza in SA, and the Hemisfair location is on the edge of Yanaguana Garden! Get your Neapolitan pizza as a carry-out order and you can enjoy dinner while the kids play nearby at the playground or splash pad.

DoSeum kids area

Your absolute must-do experiences with kids in San Antonio?

Quick answer? My top 3 picks are Mission San Jose, Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair, and the DoSeum. More deets on those:

Try to go see one of the missions with your kids. San Jose is the best with kids, but the Alamo is the most iconic (and located near the riverwalk.)

Hemisfair is EPIC! It's the big city park was where SA hosted the 1968 Worlds Fair, but they've revitalized it so much recently. There are a bunch offun things to do there like going to the top of the Tower of the Americas, the free Civic Park wading pools, playground/splash pad at Yanaguana Garden, indoor theatre, and lots of great restaurants like pizza, ice cream, and a pelateria.

Brackenridge Park is packed with stuff to do. Yes, there's a park and playground, but in this general area you'll also find the DoSeum (a world-class kids museum) the San Antonio Zoo + mini train, Kiddie Park, and the Japanese Tea Garden (free!).

Hemisfair Park

Best playgrounds and/or splash pads in San Antonio?

I know I probably sound like a broken record by now...but Hemisfair!!! If you're visiting San Antonio with kids I'm guessing you want to stay as central as possible, and Hemisfair is just the best for that.

The playground here is SO gorgeous and it's huge! I love that there's a playground, splash pad, sand pit, and wading pool in one area, plus lots of places to eat (and a darling coffee shop called Commonwealth nearby) so parents can get fuel + caffeine while kids play.

If you have a car and you want to drive to some other really cool playgrounds, here's my guide to the best parks and playgrounds in San Antonio.

Which museum in San Antonio is best for kids?

Well the kids museum is obviously the best...duh. Haha. DoSeum is SO fun for all ages of kids, but especially if you're traveling with toddlers or very young kids!

But if I'm not being captain obvious then I'd say the second best option is the Witte, which is just across the street from the DoSeum. It's a natural history and science museum, but it has an entire building dedicated to kids learning with lots of interactive play. Super fun.

The Civic Park Pools at Hemisfair

Civic Park at Hemisfair

Y'all, this one is SO fun! The wading pools at Civic Park opened in 2023. These are located in Hemisfair, just outside the Henry B. Gonzalez convention center. They're totally free to visit!

There's a total of 5 unique wading pools that the city of San Antonio created as an efficient, eco-friendly way to use excess water from the convention center. It goes through its own purification process before being used to fill these pools. After that, the water is used to irrigate the grounds or it heads to the nearby splash pad at Yanaguana Garden.

Civic Park at Hemisfair

Full disclosure: these pools are supposed to be for "feet and paws only," meaning they're designed to be wading pools.

Another full disclosure: none of the kids were wading! They were all full-on swimming with swimsuits, goggles, and diving rings. I mean, the water was deep enough to swim, so kids were swimming!

Definitely plan to bring your kids to the new pools at Civic Park at Hemisfair sometime soon. You can pair this activity with the next one (which also happens to be free.)

Kiddie Park

Kiddie Park San Antonio

Located in Brackenridge Park right near the San Antonio Zoo, the historic Kiddie Park in San Antonio is a total throwback.

It’s America’s oldest children's amusement park, dating back to 1925. But don’t worry…rides have been updated to keep things safe! There’s an old-fashioned carousel, a Ferris wheel, and carnival games like a milk bottle toss.

The Kiddie Park relocated to Brackenridge Park in 2019, but still maintains the old school charm and delight of its original location.

Highly recommend the Kiddie Park as a great place for grandparents to bring their grandchildren to as they can relive some of their own childhood memories of carnival rides and fairs while enjoying time with the grandkids.

Brackenridge Park

21 Things To Do In San Antonio With Kids!

I can't write a guide to the best kid-friendly activities in San Antonio without mentioning Brackenridge! It's a 343-acre park and a great FREE option if you're in SATX with kids.

While a visit to the park itself is fun (there are playgrounds and plenty of space to have a picnic lunch, kick a soccer ball, etc.), it's also connected to a lot of other fun options located at Brackenridge Park.

While you're here, you can visit the Japanese Tea Garden, the Witte Museum, or the San Antonio Zoo. These things are all located at Brackenridge, so you could easily fill an entire day at this beautiful outdoor space.

Seaworld San Antonio

We can’t make a list of things to do with kids in San Antonio without mentioning SeaWorld! You probably already know everything about it, but are a few quick things to know.

There are three parks in the SeaWorld chain, but the San Antonio location is the largest one, covering over 250-acres.

Enjoy roller coasters and rides, live entertainment, and marine exhibits like the beluga whale and dolphin shows.

SeaWorld also has multiple restaurants, cafés, snack bars, and coffee shops at the amusement park. If you choose to spend a full day here, no need to pack a lunch!

Aquatica San Antonio

Next to SeaWorld you'll find Aquatica, an awesome family-friendly water park. It’s different from SeaWorld because Aquatica is an ocean-themed water park, while SeaWorld is more of an amusement park with marine shows and exhibits.

Head to Aquatica for wave pools, lazy rivers, splash parks, and tons of water slides and tube rides.

If you want to go ALL OUT (maybe for your child's milestone birthday celebration) and you want a fun summertime activity for kids in San Antonio, book an overnight stay at one of the epic resorts here!

Is San Antonio A Good City To Visit With Kids?

100% yes, San Antonio is an AWESOME city to visit with your kids! Here's why:

One of the best parts about San Antonio is that, in addition to the amazing restaurants and award-winning breweries and beautiful places to stay, there's a lot of rich history here.

In fact, more than any of the large cities in Texas (like Dallas, Houston, or Austin), San Antonio has a centuries-old history that can still be witnessed in downtown San Antonio  by visiting The Alamo. It dates back to the early 1700s!

So in addition to going to a fun waterpark like Aquatica or getting tickets to an amusement park like Six Flags Fiesta Texas or Morgan's Wonderland, you can find some fun things to do with kids in San Antonio that are culturally enriching. Win-win.

Hemisfair Playground

By the way, the hot climate (see: a local's perspective on the San Antonio weather) in south Texas = lots of water rides, splash pads, pools, fountains, and marine parks.

So when you're visiting San Antonio with kids, be sure that you throw some swimsuits, lots of towels, and a change of clothes in the car. There's a good chance that your adventure will include pool time, or at least a splash pad!

Free Things To Do In San Antonio With Kids

Don't Forget Some Adult Time in SA!

It's fun to find creative things to do in San Antonio with your kids, but don't forget to carve in some "me" time, too!
