Where to Eat in Stone Oak/Far Northside San Antonio

For as many people as live on the far north side of San Antonio in and around the area known as Stone Oak, there is a deplorable lack of decent restaurants. Truly, most of the options are uninspired with mediocre chains and fast-casual eateries ruling the roost. Living in Stone Oak - great! But if you want to eat in Stone Oak - um, not so much.

Now don’t get me wrong, there’s a time and a place for a burrito from Chipotle, but it certainly isn’t for ALL THE TIME. For those of us who live in the area, searching for respectable food gets old, and driving to more culinary-friendly parts of town – the Pearl Historic District, Southtown, and the Rim – gets even older.

Thankfully, there is a small handful of restaurants that have risen above the humdrum of typical Stone Oak food and give residents a few outstanding options to dine at. So, if you can’t stand another meal at Chili’s, read on for some recommendations on where to eat in Stone Oak.

Where to Eat in Stone Oak

Silo Elevated Cuisine 1604

This new American restaurant is the perfect place for a date night or celebration in Northside SA. Silo Elevated Cuisine 1604 is one of four Silo locations in and across the city and they are known for their consistency and quality. Delicious food, stylish décor, and a quiet environment – that’s Silo.

While the menu is pretty standard upscale new American fare, there are a few standouts. Silo is known the city-over for its oysters and the 1604 location doesn’t disappoint with its signature chicken-fried oysters. We also recommend the crispy calamari, shrimp and grits, and the pork chop, served with a side of green chili mac and cheese, sauteed spinach, goat cheese, and an ancho cherry sauce.

Pan & Coffee

Pan & Coffee is a bakery and coffee shop that opened its doors in 2020 and has been a popular place to relax and enjoy a cup of joe ever since. With a focus on pan dulces and Mexican home cooking, Pan & Coffee is a fantastic option for catching up with a friend over a concha and a latte.

Pan & Coffee’s menu includes coffeehouse classics, as well as breakfast and lunch options from both sides of the border. If you are interested in trying one of their specialty drinks, we suggest the concha latte, the latte de olla, or the dirty horchata with a shot of espresso. If you are in the mood for something more substantial, go with one of the chilaquiles or one of the tortas. Portion sizes are considerable, and flavors are bold and yummy.

Nonna Osteria 1604

The original Nonna Osteria, opened in 2017 and located downtown in the Fairmont Hotel, has been a go-to Italian staple for many years now in the Alamo city. So, when Chef Luca Della Casa (of Food Network stardom) announced a second location on the far north side of SA, Stone Oak residents rejoiced. Nonna Osteria 1604 officially opened in September of 2022, one story below Silo Elevated Cuisine 1604.

Nonna, much like the original, boasts the perfect combination of classic style and enticing food from Northern Italy. While there are a few menu crossovers from the downtown location, most of the menu items served up at Nonna 1604 are unique and fresh. Options include Antipasti, salads, pizzas, pasta, mains, and desserts.

If you are looking for something special, order the table-side Tartufo pasta, and your server will bring out a gigantic wheel of parmesan and toss your pasta and truffle mushrooms in a hole that has been hollowed out in the cheese. It’s totally fun, totally delicious, and totally rich – exactly what you want from an Italian restaurant.

Full Belly

Thankfully, Stone Oak brunch go-ers are not without a fantastic option close by. Fully Belly, open for breakfast, lunch, and the oh-so-important cocktails, is an excellent choice for brunch in the Stone Oak area, and now at their second location in Olmos Park.

Full Belly, one of the best brunch restaurants in San Antonio, as well as one of the best places to eat in Stone Oak, offers a robust menu of innovative takes on American brunch foods. Some of our absolute favorites are the Melty Cheesy Thang, the Pecan Pie French Toast, the Barbacoa Breakfast Poutine, and of course, the house Bloody Mary.

Trilogy Pizza

While chain pizza options abound in Stone Oak (we’re talking Domino’s, Marco’s, Pizza Hut, and Jet’s), thankfully there is a wonderful artisan option as well. Trilogy Pizza has been serving up NY and Chicago-style pizzas out of their brick oven since 2003 and has become a neighborhood favorite as well as one of the best pizza spots in SA.

Trilogy has made its mark as one of only 2-3 pizza places in the whole of SA that serve deep-dish pizza. And while San Antonio is certainly no Chicago, Trilogy’s deep dish can more than hold its own against the Windy City’s best.

Guests to Trilogy can choose their toppings or select from one of their 14 house special pizzas. Our favorites are the Capone, the Spinach Pie, and the San Antonio Special with jalapeños. Appetizers, salads, and pasta are also available.

Panfila Cantina

Newcomer Panfila Cantina opened its doors in April 2022 and hit the ground running with its authentic, tasty Mexican food. Panfila is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which means that Stone Oak residents can get their Mexican food hit at any time of the day.

Panfila’s dinner menu has a well-rounded offering of appetizers, street food, enchiladas, tacos, and items from the grill. Whatever you choose to order, make sure it is served up on their mouth-watering, homemade tortillas – they are so yummy.

Also be sure to check out Panfila’s brunch/lunch menu, which includes much of the dinner menu, and then some. Adventurous eaters, big groups, or those that are just puro San Antonio - be sure to ask about Panfila’s giant concha: a 14-inch mega-concha for $50 that can feed an army, or one really determined local. Curry Boys BBQ, Stone Oak

It took a minute, but we FINALLY have some great BBQ in Stone Oak. Curry Boys opened their second location in 2024 by setting up shop smack dab in the middle of Stone Oak. And they brought with them the ONLY solid BBQ in the area.

Curry Boys gets their brisket from South BBQ and Kitchen, one of the best BBQ joints in San Antonio, and then serves it over one of three, ultra-flavorful curries. It's the marriage you never knew was perfect.

If you're a first-timer, it's all about the Brisket Smoke Show. Start here. It's so good that even when you aren't a first-timer, chances are high, it's what you'll return to time and again.

Sushishima Japanese Restaurant

The best sushi in Stone Oak can be found in the Vineyard Shopping Center at Sushishima Japanese Restaurant. With a robust menu of all things Japanese - sushi, nigiri, sashimi, ramen, hibachi entrees, and even bento boxes - Sushishima covers just about everything you may want when visiting a Japanese restaurant.

High recommend the house roll with delicious red snapper and asparagus. The whole thing is then covered in tempura and fried which gives it a lovely crunch.
