Newstand Coffee Is The Coolest New Coffee Shop In San Antonio

The Newstand is a funky new addition among the best restaurants in San Antonio. This coffee and sandwich shop opened their doors to San Antonio from the Jefferson Bank Building on Broadway back in May. The goal was to bring back the age-old pairing of coffee and a newspaper.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sara Branstetter has called San Antonio, TX home for the last 20 years. She’s a wife of a veteran, mom of four, and a cuddler of the world's best dog.  The army brought her family to San Antonio years ago, and the city, its culture, and its food have kept her here.

When you walk in, you’ll notice TONS of reading material - papers, periodicals, and magazines - as well as a large projection wall with movies, and a small boutique store. Whether you want to eat/drink/read/watch/shop, or all of the above, the Newstand has you covered.

The eclectic feel of the shop is mirrored in its unique food where sugary breakfast cereals find their place next to gourmet sandwiches and housemade pastries. Sandwiches are named for different newspapers (think the Express, Times, Post, etc.) and all served on scratch made focaccia and ciabatta breads.

I tried the Express, a bizarre mashup of Hatch green chile pimento cheese, sprouts, mayo, and salt and vinegar chips, all stuffed in the Newstand’s delicious focaccia.

The verdict: so, so yummy, topped off with a delightful crunch. Throw in a coffee from their respectable coffee menu that includes interesting-looking seasonal specials, and you have a fun, albeit different, breakfast, brunch, or lunch.

Also worth noting: Newstand uses Proud Mary coffee, a reputable roaster in Austin, Texas. They offer a variety of pourovers, including the rare Geisha beans (which come at a whopping $18 per cup!)

Thanks to the interminable construction on Broadway, access to the Newstand will be a little difficult for the foreseeable future. The bank building is currently covered in scaffolding and you have to hunt a bit to find the entrance to the shop, but it is right on the corner of Josephine and Broadway.

I recommend looking for street parking off of E. Josephine to get you as close as possible to the restaurant, or down the street in the Oxbow garage if you want a little added protection for your vehicle.
