Love Lock Bridge in San Antonio Might Make You Fall In Love All Over Again

A lot of cities have their own version of this, but the Love Lock Bridge in San Antonio is special for a few reasons.

It started in 2010, and it’s clearly been quite the popular idea. Just walk by the bridge and you’ll see that the gates are absolutely loaded with personalized locks.

What’s The Purpose Of A Love Lock Bridge?

It’s where couples (typically newlyweds) will go to “lock in their love” right after getting married. It’s pretty popular in San Antonio to go to this bridge right after a wedding ceremony and click the lock on the bridge, lock it with a key, and then throw that key into the San Antonio River below.

How To Place A Lock On The San Antonio Love Lock Bridge

You’ll have to bring your own lock, of course. But they’re easily found on Amazon, home improvement stores, or Target.

A lot of couples like to write their initials or their wedding date on the lock. Some of the locks that I saw even had unique poems or quotes, which I thought was very sweet!

Then (the hardest part, honestly…) you’ll have to find a free spot to place your lock. This bridge is VERY popular and VERY small, so good luck finding a spot. Btw, maybe try to buy a teeny tiny lock rather than the largest one you can find. It will make finding your spot a bit easier!

Then you simply lock it to the bridge and kiss as you throw the key into the river and “lock in your love.”

Do You Have To Be A Newlywed To Place A Lock?

There are no rules or systems here! You can literally just show up at any time and put your own lock on the bridge.

A lot of tourists (myself included!) just enjoy walking on the bridge and looking at the thousands and thousands of locks. It’s fun to think of the love they represent in the world.

And you can totally just add a lock to the bridge for fun! Do it with your family, with your friends, or with a longtime partner. Even though the Love Lock Bridge in San Antonio is typically associated with newlyweds, it’s really for everyone.

Where Is The Love Lock Bridge Located?

The Love Lock Bridge in San Antonio is on Kallison Walk. It’s a small footbridge on the western edge of the Downtown Reach of the Riverwalk.

The Love Lock Bridge is actually just across the street from the Courthouse Wedding Chapel. Which is absolutely no coincidence…newlyweds love fun little traditions (after all, that’s where most standard wedding practices come from) and this unique Riverwalk tradition is lots of fun.
