The one, the only…the OG of the San Antonio burger scene is Chris Madrid’s. This legendary burger joint has been serving locals since 1977 and is known for its ultra-cheesy burgers—especially the signature “Cheddar Cheezy."

The rebuilt location maintains its commitment to hearty, indulgent burgers that have earned local acclaim, including back-to-back "Best Burger in SA" titles. Parking can be tricky, with a small on-site lot and overflow street parking nearby.

Diana’s Burgers

Bunz Handcrafted Burgers: One of San Antonio’s Best (and Priciest) Burgers

Parking is unfortunately a very tricky business at the downtown location of Bunz as they do not offer dedicated parking. The most obvious place to park is a surface lot across the street from the Embassy Suites Hotel, however at $22 to park, it is crazy pricey, so try to avoid it.

The Rand Parking Garage is on the other side of Soledad St. from Bunz and is a more affordable option. If possible, we suggest trying to nab some street parking at a digital meter.

*And if you want to avoid the parking headache altogether, just head to their second location near La Cantera Mall as they have a free dedicated lot and drive-thru.

Pumpers is a newish adult "burger store" run by well-known San Antonio chef, Stefan Bowers. Bowers's burgers are HUGE, messy, and positively delicious. And if that makes them "adult," I'm all in.

In reality, Pumpers "adult" marketing largely has to do with a small collection of edgy merch you can find in the back of the store and nothing to do with its excellent burgers. So don't shy away from a visit. You'll miss something special.

Mark’s Outing

Mark's Outing, a San Antonio burger spot since 2005, is known for its 2lb burger challenge, where guests who finish the massive $25.99 burger earn a spot in the restaurant’s Hall of Fame. The walls are filled with photos of those who conquered the challenge!

Aside from the 2lb burger, Mark’s offers a variety of classic and specialty burgers, including BBQ and Coaches Chili options, as well as non-red-meat choices like turkey, black bean, and Beyond burgers.

Longhorn Cafe touts itself as the home of the original Big Juicy. And indeed, the burgers are just that - big and juicy - and have been so for 35+ years.

At Longhorn Cafe, service is friendly and casual. You place your order at the counter and sit down, and then they call you when your food is ready. We recommend you order whatever big and juicy burger suits you at the moment but be sure to add some of their fantastic tater tots.

Vegetarian burgers and gluten-free bun options are available. And if burgers aren’t what you’re feeling, try their crowd-pleasing chicken fried steak sandwich.

Benjie’s Munch

Chef Benjie started his burger journey in 2015 when he cashed out his 401k to buy a food truck, and after gaining success, opened a brick-and-mortar location in 2017 near Bitters and Blanco on San Antonio's north side.

While the food truck still serves events, the restaurant is the place to enjoy his standout burgers, like the Candied Jalapeño Bacon Cheeseburger, known for its perfect balance of sweetness and spice.

Benjie’s Munch focuses on “scratch comfort food” with fresh, high-quality ingredients, ensuring nothing is ever frozen. For a special treat, ask about the secret menu, where you can request long-time favorite items that rotate in and out of the main menu.

The Cove

The Cove is a unique spot that blends family-friendly dining with an outdoor beer garden, car wash, children’s playscape, and dog park.

Featured on the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, it focuses on sustainable, local, and organic ingredients.

Last Place Burgers

Last Place Burgers, a food truck parked next to Roadmap Brewing, gained attention in 2023 when YouTube personality Mike Majlick declared it had the best burgers in the world. While that’s up for debate, it’s safe to say they serve some of San Antonio’s best.
