A Bit About This Guide To The Best Pizza In SA

Best pizza in San Antonio

It’s really hard to choose a single “best’ pie in the city, so these spots are roughly listed from north to south. All 13 of them are worth checking out. The pizza restaurants at the top of the list are the ones that we think are the best, but truly - all 13 of them are great.

Best pizza in San Antonio

We personally tried every single pizza on this list. Some are really good places to hang out and enjoy the ambiance, while other pizza restaurants are a bit grungier and maybe the type of place you’d like to get your pizza to go. We’ll make note of that…because if you’re looking for a really cute pizza counter in San Antonio where you can order a bottle of wine to go with your pizza during date night, it’s on this list!

13 Best Pizza Spots In San Antonio

1. Dough Pizzeria Napoletana

Dough Pizzeria: Best Pizza In San Antonio
Dough Pizzeria

Known for being featured 3 different times on Food Network (in 2011, 2018, and 2021), Dough Pizzeria is a neighborhood restaurant in San Antonio serving authentic Neapolitan-style pies. Not only are these pies officially certified by the elite Italian governing body of pizza (the APN), which recognizes that these are legitimate Neapolitan pizzas, but Dough also focuses on southern Italian cuisine and Italian wine on the menu.

When you arrive, you must order the house-made burrata. The signature Burrata Al Tartufo is especially lovely, filled with truffle, mascarpone, ricotta, fresh local tomatoes, a sugar-sweet rosemary balsamic reduction, EVOO, and toasty crostini on the side. The dough works with nearby farmers to provide local produce for their salads, so everything is crisp and packed with flavor.

For the pizzas, keep in mind that these authentic Italian pies are 12”, so order accordingly. The menu items that have been featured on Food Network are marked clearly, but one pie that wasn’t featured on the network (but is still worth ordering!) is their basic Margherita. Because it’s a classic pie with no frills, it’s a great way to see how Dough really shines! You can really appreciate that salty crust with a chewy interior and crispy outer shell, the soft middle of the pie, the perfect mozzarella di bufala, and the local basil from Lone Star Farm.

There are two locations: the newer one near downtown at Hemisfair park is a lot cuter, but they both serve those amazing, small pies with charred leopard spotting on the crust and delicious toppings of the highest quality.

Parking at the Blanco Rd location is easy (there’s a large parking lot in front of the restaurant), but if you want to check out the more aesthetically-pleasing Hemisfair location, plan on paying for street or lot parking.

2. Il Forno

Il Forno
Best Pizza In San Antonio: Il Forno

Although the award-winning restaurant Gwyndolyn is (sadly) no longer open in San Antonio, the sister restaurant Il Forno is! And this neighborhood pizza eatery prioritizes the same values: locally sourced veggies, meats cured in-house, and local beer and wine, all served with their made-from-scratch brick oven pizza.

Il Forno has a beautiful outdoor patio (perfect for a cool San Antonio evening) and a small indoor dining space. Order at the counter, take a seat, pop opens your bottle of wine, and your flash-cooked pie will be brought to you shortly.

All of the pizzas are 12-inch thin crust, so perfect to  share for date night (along with a couple of apps, like the delicious pesto potatoes with goat cheese, or their take on the timeless caprese salad.) But the pizzas are the true star of the show here, so save some room! Similar to Dough Pizzeria, the classic pies are where Il Forno really shines. Try the perfect Margarita, or the Intero with crumbled Italian sausage and sopressata.

Of course, there are some fun flavors to try, like the Milano (garlic, gorgonzola, ricotta, swiss chard, cranberries!! red onion, and pecan) or the Fun Guy with green onions and mixed shrooms.

And anything you don’t order this time you can just get the next time you dine at Il Forno. You’ll definitely be back.

Parking: free street parking is available. It’s a bit crowded on the weekends, but if you’re dining for lunch or on a weekday evening, you should be able to find parking nearby.

3. Fralo’s

Fralo's

Located where San Antonio’s urban sprawl meets the hill country in Leon Springs, Fralo’s isn’t one of those pizza places where you order your pizza and jet out. You come to Fralo’s when you want excellent pizza in a friendly atmosphere while dining with friends. Pizza and pizza people - that’s about as good as it gets.

Fralo’s serves up some of the best brick oven pizza in town with some of the freshest ingredients. Guests to Fralo’s can choose from a variety of traditional and signature pizzas including local favorites like Grant’s Pear 2.0 with pears and gorgonzola, the Nutty Chicken with pesto and pine nuts, and the B.O.M. with bacon and mushrooms. For those not in a pizza mood, Fralo’s has a small selection of appetizers, salads, and pastas.

Fralo’s offers both indoor and outdoor seating but if the weather is at all accommodating, outdoors is a must with views of the hill country and regular live music. Fralo’s is pet friendly and encourages you to BYOB (expect a corking fee per bottle of wine or 6 pack of beer). You can also purchase beer or wine from their bar.

Parking: there is free parking in the lot out front of Fralo’s.

4. Barbaro

Best Pizza In San Antonio: Barbaro
Barbaro
Best Pizza In San Antonio: Barbaro

Barbaro checks all the boxes: it’s a darling corner restaurant with a cute tile floor, a ceiling-height bar, friendly staff, and (most importantly) some of the BEST pizza you can find in San Antonio.

It’s essentially a classic thin, chewy crust pizza available in size medium or large. (Medium is 8 slices and can feed 2 hungry people.) It’s cooked in a wood-fired oven, resulting in a perfect crunch on the outside giving way to that fluffy, soft, salty interior that we all crave in a delicious pie.

The toppings are one of the things that set Barbaro apart from other pizza restaurants in San Antonio: they have unique combinations of traditional toppings. For instance, the Hashbown is a sweet/salty combo of tallegio cheese, which is juuuust enough of a “stinky cheese” to pair perfectly with the drizzle of honey on the red sauce, kale, and crispy shredded hashbrowns.

Barbaro has an excellent happy hour program, too. Stop by from 4-6 pm or 10 pm - 2 am to take advantage of their very reasonably priced cocktails and pizza by the slice. Another thing worth noting: Barbaro is a lovely restaurant to stop by for a full meal of charcuterie boards, colorful salads, tins of high-quality seafood, and other small and large plates. Or just pop in by yourself and sit at the bar while you devour a negroni and a Roasted Mushroom pizza. You can’t go wrong.

Parking: they have a small lot adjacent to the building. If it’s full, there’s neighborhood parking nearby.

5. Florios

Best Pizza In San Antonio: Florio's
Florio's

Florio’s is your no-frills, family-owned, NY-style pizza and Italian sub restaurant where you can get great slices of pizza, Italian subs piled high with cold cuts, and some great desserts. It’s a casual pizza spot in San Antonio that dates back to 1980: picture black-and-white linoleum floors, plastic-covered chairs, and brick walls.

You’ll walk in and order at the small u-shaped counter. There are a handful of red bar stools, or you can grab a table in the back room. The pizza is brought out pretty quickly: thin, chewy slices with big, flat pieces of pepperoni and lots of melty cheese. A large NY pie, a meatball sub, and a cannoli should all be on your to-try list.

Parking: free parking in the lot out front.

7. Capo’s Pizzeria

Capo's Pizzeria

This San Antonio local pizza chain is serving some of the best Buffalo NY-style pizza in Alamo City. (What’s Buffalo NY-style pizza, btw? It has a fluffy crust, a slightly sweet tomato sauce, and pepperoni cups that are charred on the edges.)

It’s a fantastic place to dine in for a single slice. The main location on Broadway is tucked into a strip mall and has the iconic red checkered tablecloths, soda fountain, and casual feel. It’s a great spot to bring the family for a weeknight dinner.

Since this San Antonio pizza restaurant is family-owned by Buffalo NY natives, you know you can expect authentic, delicious pies every single time.

Parking: The Broadway location is in a strip mall, so there’s plenty of parking in the lot out front.

8. Trilogy Pizza

Best Pizza In San Antonio: Trilogy
Trilogy

Deep dish lovers, don’t be dismayed, we haven’t forgotten you! While San Antonio isn’t exactly the mecca of Chicago-style pizza (seriously, go to Chicago for that), Trilogy Pizza has been filling the deep dish vacuum since 2003 with their spot-on thick and fluffy, brick oven browned crusts filled with your choice of meats, cheeses, and veggies. If you prefer to try one of their specialty pizzas, we suggest the Quattro Carni or Spinach Pie.

While their deep dish is worth the trip, Trilogy also makes an excellent traditional NY-style pizza as well as salads and pasta. And since pizza can be a difficult choice for those with food allergies, Trilogy caps off its pizza offerings with a cauliflower crust pizza which is gluten-free, egg-free, and vegan.

Parking: free parking in the lot out front.

9. Stella Public House

Stella Public House

Looking for a beautiful pizza restaurant in a trendy area? Go to Stella Public House! While it is more than just a pizza restaurant, pizza is definitely one of the stars of its menu.

Located in the beautiful Blue Star Arts Complex, Stella Public House features a long, rustic bar (the perfect place to meet up with a friend for a glass of wine) and a lively restaurant with small tables and long, communal tables. The small plates are always a fun way to kick off a meal! Try the steaming wild mushroom mac and cheese, made with local mushrooms and topped with truffle oil, or the house-favorite lamb and pork meatballs served with a fiery tomato sauce.

Their “farm-to-pizza” concept means they take artisan ingredients to make their wood-fired pizza. It’s baked in a blistering hot Italian oven, creating that signature chewy crust with dark, charred spots around the edges. There are lots of fun pizza toppings, both in the traditional and unconventional categories. If you want to try something Texas-y, the southern hospitality is Stella’s take on a bbq pizza: homemade bbq sauce, brisket, pulled pork, a kick of jalapenos, and a spicy mango habanero drizzle to top it off.

Parking: Stella Public House is located in the Blue Start Arts Complex, which has a paid parking lot available. The lot can definitely fill up on crowded weekends!

10. Via 313 Pizzeria

Via 313 San Antonio

While it seems to be harder and harder to find deep dish pizza (everyone loves a thin, foldable NY-style or a tiny Neapolitan pie these days), Via 313 went in the opposite direction and started making their SUPER deep dish Detroit-style pizzas. And we can’t get enough of it.

This Austin-based pizza chain opened a San Antonio restaurant in the summer of 2022, and it’s an absolute must if you’re trying to cover the best pizza spots in SA. What’s a Detroit-style pizza? It’s a rectangular pizza that’s baked in a deep-dish ban, resulting in a thick crust that has a crunchy rim and a super soft and fluffy interior. The cheese goes on the crust, and the sauce goes on top.

If you’re not interested in the thick crust, Via 313 also offers bar-style pizza, which is the same “crunchy-on-the-outside, chewy-on-the-inside” concept, just with fewer carbs.

Parking: free parking lot

11. Brava Brava

Brava Brava
Best Pizza In San Antonio: Brava Brava

While it doesn’t top the list in terms of ambiance (this restaurant is slightly dated and lackluster), if we’re strictly talking about pizza, the Neapolitan pizza at Brava Brava deserves a spot on this list of the best pizza in San Antonio.

It’s the perfect pie, made with San Marzano DOP tomato sauce (the real deal!), homemade mozz, and fresh toppings. It’s fired in a legitimate wood-fired oven from Naples from famous oven maker Stefano Ferrara, resulting in a flash-cooked pie with a soft, nearly undercooked middle and a charred, puffy exterior, exactly the way a Naples pizza should be.

The decor feels a bit like…well, like a dated Italian restaurant. Tan square tile floors, dark walls, black brass chairs. While it’s not going to win any design awards, the pizza itself is a reason to visit Brava Brava.

Parking: free parking lot

12. Back Unturned Brewing Co.

Pizza at Back Unturned

If you’re looking for a San Antonio brewery that serves pizza, head to Back Unturned! It’s a convenient location near downtown, and this brewery has an intimate, industrial feel with dark tables and an open-concept brewhouse.

They serve personal pies here, so it’s a great spot to stop by for a solo lunch + a pint. Along with their simple menu of appetizers like caprese, chicken wings, and beer twists, Back Unturned offers small, personal pies in 3 categories: red sauce, white sauce, and specialty pies.

Parking: Back Unturned Brewing Co. doesn’t have a parking lot, but there’s free street parking nearby.

13. The Last Slice

Best Pizza In San Antonio: The Last Slice
Best Pizza Spots In San Antonio

This carry-out/delivery pizza restaurant in the northeast corner of San Antonio makes handcrafted pies, sings, subs, and salads. It’s the perfect place to order ahead for a few large pizzas to enjoy during the game, or to stop by for an individual slice when you need a quick lunch.

It’s a basic menu, but you can really get pretty crazy with the pick-your-own toppings. From the 5 sauce options (classic red, spicy red, basil pesto, white garlic, and bbq) to the 5 cheese options (mozz, parm, asiago, mixed cheddar, gorgonzola, feta), all the way to the dozens of meat and veggies options, you’re left with hundreds of different combinations.

But if you want something classic, the Ultimate Meat Lovers is a solid option. These pies are served in large and small sizes, and they’re the perfect choice for a classic, local pizza that’s a huge step up from a boring national chain.

Parking: free parking lot in front of The Last Slice.
